Is Japanese pop music losing its relevance?

###LDH Hiro's wife, the actress Aya Ueto is the famous SGI member and the president of Avex, Mr. Matsuura is also SGI member. One of Exile's side projects, Sandaime J Soul Brothers of LDH belong to the record label rhythm zone of Avex.
One of the sponsors of Japan record awards is SGI's newspaper Seikyo Shinbun these years. Piko Taro and AAA of Avex seem to be supported by SGI members. AAA is nominated for Japan Records awards. Kiyoshi HIkawa is the famous SGI member and he is also nomineted for JRA.
In 2005 the selection committee chairman died of doubtful fire before Japan record awards after the mysterious document was scattered.
HIkaru Utada's mother, singer Keiko Fuji seemed SGI member, Hikaru Utada in London was nominated for Japan record awards of this year.
Keiko Fuji has done mysterious suicide on August 22 after the radio of Hikaru Utada
and she played tunes including broadcast prohibited terminology and talk about indipendent label by radio on August 20 in 2013.
According to shukan bunshun, the most of members of selection comittee of JRA are journalists of sports newspaper etc and they eat expensive dinners and enjoy nightclub with hostess by that money of LDH.####my comment

The Japan Times

⤢Shukan Bunshun recently ran some articles describing how last year the talent management company LDH allegedly paid entertainment behemoth Burning Productions to ensure that one of LDH’s acts would win the top prize at the 2015 Japan Record Awards (JRA). Accompanying one of the articles was a photo of an invoice on Burning stationery showing that LDH owed it ¥108 million for “end-of-year business promotion expenses.”

LDH manages the all-male R&B collective Exile and its side projects, one of which, Sandaime J Soul Brothers, was the subject of LDH’s under-the-radar largesse and won the JRA last year. They also won it the year before, and their senpai (senior) group, Exile, won it in 2008, 2010 and 2013.

Though Burning does not run the JRA — that’s done by the ⤢Japan Composers Association (JCA) — it plays a central role, in selecting the winners along with two other major entertainment companies: Avex Holdings, which owns Avex Records; and TBS, the television network that sponsors and broadcasts the JRA ceremony. The jury is made up of employees of these three companies, as well as journalists and industry insiders.

Following its investigation, Bunshun contacted the related organizations. Gendai Kano, the 78-year-old chairman of JCA, apologized and told the magazine the payment was “unacceptable” without admitting that it actually occurred. Ryotaro Konishi, the chairman of the jury and a former executive of tabloid Sports Nippon, said he would have to “scrutinize what really happened.” The TBS producer in charge of JRA, Yoji Ochiai, said his company had nothing to do with the award selection, only the broadcast, but there were seven TBS staff on the jury.

This confluence of denial in the face of arguably strong evidence would normally spark its own media circus, but as entertainment writer Takashi Odajima wrote in a ⤢Nov. 4 blog post for Nikkei Business Online, there has been no secondary coverage of the scandal. Odajima explains that rumors of JRA bribery have been circulating for years, “but this was the first time a related article was published with evidence, and I expected a lot of noise.” In the end, Bunshun’s bombshell “turned out to be a dud,” says Odajima.

TV ignored the story completely. Odajima says that’s because broadcasters are beholden to a handful of “dons” who head the country’s major talent agencies and control which stars are available for TV appearances. What perplexes Odajima is that this corporate dynamic remains unchanged as the JRA declines in significance.

Since the 1990s, an increasing number of popular artists have shown less interest in the award, and every year “the ceremony itself becomes increasingly insular, more irrelevant to viewers.” He predicts the award will not last “10 more years, after all the dons are dead.”

Odajima hears the organizers are “struggling” just to find a winner this year, partly due to the scandal but also because one of the unmentioned conditions for receiving the award is that the recipient show up at the ceremony, which is broadcast live. That’s why it was moved a decade ago from Dec. 31 to Dec. 30.

Formerly, the JRA acted as a prelude to NHK’s much more prestigious New Year’s Eve song contest, “Kohaku Uta Gassen,” but when NHK started airing the show an hour earlier, it overlapped with the JRA, and traditionally the victors at JRA also appeared on “Kohaku.” Consequently, JRA winners opted to forego the ceremony to sing on NHK.

Also, some best-selling artists are disinclined to appear on TV at all. Three of the biggest songs this year have been by Hikaru Utada, Namie Amuro and Radwimps, none of whom have shown much interest in TV lately, so they probably won’t make the JRA’s shortlist.

The JRA was launched in 1959 as the Japanese answer to the Grammys and used sales as the main selection criterion. Ratings peaked in 1977 at 51 percent, but by 2005 audience share had dropped to 10 percent. It rose a little after the live broadcast moved to Dec. 30, but last year it was still only 13 percent.

Music consumption in Japan has become atomized. There is no national consensus on the year’s “best song” as there was when everyone watched the same TV shows and adored the same singing stars. The late songwriter Eiichi Otaki once told the ⤢Asahi Shimbun that in the golden age of pop “certain songs really represented entire years to the Japanese public.” Those days are long gone.

According to web magazine ⤢Litera, Burning has exploited its considerable power to dominate the JRA since the early 1990s, when the award was no longer a big deal to the public and had merely become a promotional tool. At that time, TV was still the main means for selling records, and every TV network had its own music publishing subsidiary.

As advertising dried up, TV stations relied more on publishing for revenue. They have been known to give money to record companies to cover the high costs of recording and promoting their artists in exchange for rights to those artists’ songs, which they would then use on their programs. The songs became hits due to TV exposure and, in turn, generated more money through ancillary products such as ringtones and karaoke tracks. The TV stations would share in the profits.

Burning and Avex are major beneficiaries of this system, since Avex controls many top artists and Burning has the nation’s best PR resources. In addition, both companies administer the song rights of their charges, such as top ’90s dance music producer Tetsuya Komuro, who was eventually ⤢arrested for fraud because he tried to sell rights he didn’t own. In order to increase sales, LDH sought Burning’s help in winning the JRA. Burning was simply providing a professional service, though one that isn’t known to the general public, since that would demean whatever cachet of prestige the JRA enjoys.

At this point perhaps no one genuinely thinks the JRA acknowledges quality — maybe no one ever did — so to most people the LDH payment doesn’t count as a scandal. It’s just business as usual, and as such helps explain why the state of Japanese pop music, not to mention Japanese TV, is as bad as it is.

Alleged bribery exposed at heart of Japan Record Awards

The weekly tabloid Shukan Bunshun has alleged that LDH bribed officers at the Japan record Awards to secure the win closing yr for Sandaime J Soul Brothers and their song, Unfair World.

The magazine has published an image of a receipt made on Burning production stationery. The allegation is that Burning Productions, the shadowy (reportedly yakuza-linked) management firm that exerts a large regulate over the entertainment world and skill agencies in Japan, paid the Japan record Awards officials on behalf of LDH, the skill agency that manages Sandaime J Soul Brothers.

The receipt is for ¥108 million, ostensibly for “end-of-12 months promoting business expenses”.
Sandaime J Soul Brothers is the “0.33 era” of a spin-off from the favored song workforce Exile. LDH is run through Exile entrance man Hiro, controlling a roster of pop track ability comparable to Exile and its related acts, in addition to female devices and artists akin to Crystal Kay, E-women and Flower. Its initials stand for “Love, Dream, Happiness”.
The repercussions of Shukan Bunshun’s allegations are but to be viewed, although we suppose the mainstream media will not pursue the story as discussing the scandals on the trade side of the japanese entertainment industry is a taboo.

KOBE – The Kobe District Court on Friday gave the death sentence to a man who killed a 6-year-old girl in the city in 2014.

Yasuhiro Kimino, 49, lured the first-grader to his home by asking her to sit for a painting. He then strangled and stabbed her, dismembered her body and placed it in plastic bags, prosecutors say.

The prosecutors sought the death penalty, saying Kimino showed a brutal disregard for human life.

The case was tried by presiding Judge Takeshi Samo, two other professional judges and six lay judges.

KOBE – The academic scandal over a debunked stem cell discovery has taken a criminal turn, with police questioning the scientist at the center of the storm.

Disgraced researcher Haruko Obokata recently underwent voluntary questioning in connection with the alleged theft of stem cell samples from her former employer, the Riken institute in Kobe, an investigative source said Thursday.

She was questioned in response to a complaint filed by another former Riken researcher in January last year, although Riken itself has not reported any crime, the police said.

The complainant claimed someone had stolen embryonic stem cells from the laboratory in Kobe in or after April 2011, when Obokata was still employed by Riken. She left the institute in disgrace in December 2014.

Riken concluded in February last year that, due to research misconduct over her debunked discovery of “stimulus triggered acquisition of pluripotency” cells, Obokata would have been fired had she not already resigned. She was the lead author of a pair of papers on the subject that were published in the British science journal Nature in January 2014. The research was initially seen as a groundbreaking discovery, but questions about the papers soon emerged, triggering multiple unsuccessful attempts to reproduce her findings.

In April 2014, Riken said Obokata had falsified parts of the reports. Nature retracted the papers the following July.

After failing to duplicate her results, Riken surmised in December that the so-called STAP cells were most likely embryonic stem cells, or ES cells, effectively concluding that STAP did not exist.

A container labeled “ES cells” was found in Obokata’s laboratory during the investigation, but Obokata denied mixing them, intentionally or unintentionally, with the specimens used in her research.

Last month, Obokata published a book recounting the controversy.

CHIBA – Chiba Prefectural Police arrested a 36-year-old man Friday after he went on an injurious rampage and barricaded himself in a church with a hostage, a 51-year-old female counselor, in the town of Sakura.

Special police forces stormed the church just before 5 a.m. Friday and arrested Daisuke Kotabe for allegedly confining the woman, who suffered injuries but was safe.

Kotabe, who is from Sakura, has admitted attacking the victim and holding her hostage, the police said.

They said Kotabe was at Sakura Ojidai Chapel to receive counseling from the woman when, at around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, he took out a bat and a knife from his rucksack and attacked his parents, who are in their 70s, the counselor and one other man, also in his 70s, at the church.

His parents and the man were also injured, but they managed to escape, police said, adding that none of the four victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

The police had tried to persuade Kotabe to release the hostage, but decided to storm the church about eight hours after the ordeal started, they said.

Kotabe reportedly had trouble with his parents and had been receiving counseling at the church. The police said they will investigate the cause of the attack.

The church is located in a busy urban district a few hundred meters northeast of Keisei Usui Station.

Neighbors expressed relief at the arrest of the man. A 37-year-old woman who lived by the church said she saw investigators arrive with sasumata (two-pronged poles used to restrain attackers) and shields. “It really worried me to see a crime take place so close,” she said.

At Manodai Elementary School, located some 600 meters south of the church, principal Masahiro Yamamoto kept a close watch as children came to school. “We would have delayed the school’s start had the perpetrator not been arrested in time,” Yamamoto said. “We were also considering whether to dispatch school staff along the routes children walked to school. I’m sure parents are relieved to hear he has been caught.”

His parents believe in another different religion, but it was at all different from the Protestantism church in the case this time. All the more indeed it is the unbelievable part that Kotabe have gone to the church for trouble consultation. But the trouble might be serious so he want to cling to other religion if I said adversely (local people)
