Kyodo, Staff Report
Aug 21, 2015

Police on Friday night arrested a 45-year-old man in Neyagawa, Osaka Prefecture, in connection with the murder of a junior high school girl whose body was found in Takatsuki in the prefecture, last week.

They also found the body of her male schoolmate, who is believed to have been with the girl when she went missing.

The arrest of Koji Yamada came just hours after police issued a warrant for the man over his suspected connection to the murder of Natsumi Hirata, 13. The body of Ryoto Hoshino, 12, was found in Kashiwara in the prefecture, police said. They allege Yamada is involved in abandoning Hoshino’s body.

Hirata, a first-year junior high school student from Neyagawa, Osaka, was found dead on the night of Aug. 13 in the parking lot of a distribution company in the nearby city of Takatsuki. An autopsy shows she died of suffocation at around 7 p.m. that day, according to police.

Hirata’s body was found by a driver working for the distribution company at around 11:30 p.m.

She was found face down with her hands tied behind her back and her face almost entirely wrapped in adhesive tape.

There were more than 30 cuts or stab wounds, mainly to the left side of her body — some penetrating to the bone — as well as bruises to her face and head. Marks around her neck indicated she may have been strangled by hand.

The police suspect Hirata was killed elsewhere and taken to the parking lot because little blood was found around her body.

OSAKA —

Osaka prefectural police investigating the murder of a 13-year-old girl and the disappearance of a 12-year-old boy with whom she was last seen on Aug 13, said Thursday they believe the two were met or approached by someone near Keihan Neyagawashi Station and taken away in a car.

The focus of the investigation has shifted to a mysterious car that came into the parking lot of a distribution center in Takatsuki on the night of Aug 13, where the mutilated body of Natsumi Hirata was found, Fuji TV reported.

At first, police believed two cars had come into the parking lot, but a closer examination of surveillance camera footage now shows only one car. Police said a car with its lights on entered the parking lot at around 10:35 p.m. The lights then went off and the car left. Five minutes later, the same vehicle, with its lights on again, came back into the lot and parked in the same spot as before with its lights off. The car then left at 11:10 p.m. with its lights on.

Hirata’s body was found behind a truck at around 11:35 p.m. Her hands were tied with duct tape, which was also wrapped around her head. She was wearing a white shirt, black tank top, denim shorts and navy knee-high socks, but she was not wearing any shoes. There were at least 30 cuts on her body, some as deep as to the bone.

An autopsy revealed that the girl had been suffocated, probably about four or five hours before her body was found, Fuji TV reported.

Hirata’s classmate, Ryoto Hoshino, who was with her on the night of Aug 12 and early Aug 13, remains missing.

Police have been trying to piece together the movements of the two children after they left their homes on Aug 12.

Here is what is known so far.

On Aug 12 at about 6 p.m., Hirata told her mother she was going out to play with Hoshino. She took her bicycle and a small tent. Meanwhile, Hoshino told his mother at 9 p.m. that he was going to hang out with Hirata.

The two were seen outside a convenience store at 10:30 p.m., eating ramen. A passerby asked Hirata where her parents were and she just laughed.

After that, the children apparently started texting friends on the messaging app Line. Around midnight, Hoshino asked a 12-year-old girl if he could spend the night at her house but she said no. Hirata texted a friend and asked if she could come over but the friend said Hirata should go home or her mother would get angry.

At 1:09 a.m. on Aug 13, security camera footage at a shopping arcade showed Hirata riding her bicycle. Then at 5:09 a.m., she and Hoshino are seen walking back and forth in the arcade where they most likely remained until dawn to get out of the rain.

At 6:35 a.m., Hirata texted a friend and said she and Hoshino were going to Kyoto and that she probably wouldn’t be returning to Neyagawa. That was the last time anyone heard from her or Hoshino. When friends attempted to call them on their cell phones during the day, they got no signal.

The arcade is a short walk from the train station. Hoshino was seen once more, placing his bicycle in a paid parking spot outside the station at around 3 p.m. on the afternoon of Aug 13, and that is the last time he was seen. Hirata’s bike was found nearby.

Police said there is no evidence that the children got on a train for Kyoto. Security camera footage shows no one resembling the children at the train station or the bus stop, and no witnesses have been found, who saw them at the station that day.
Police are trying to find out what happened between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., which is when Hirata died, according to the autopsy.
Police are asking anyone with any information about the two children or the mysterious car to come forward or call 090-7885-7034.

OSAKA--Police arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the slayings of two schoolchildren missing for more than a week who had reportedly planned to go to Kyoto together.

The girl's horrific end has dominated news coverage in Japan for several days. The body of a boy was discovered on Aug. 21 before police arrested Koji Yamada, 45, on suspicion of abandoning the body of 13-year-old girl Natsumi Hirata. This is usually a prelude to more serious charges after intensive questioning.

Hirata's body was found dumped in a parking lot of a trucking company in Takatsuki in Osaka Prefecture on Aug. 13. Her face was almost completely covered with duct tape and she had multiple cuts to her body. Police determined that she died of suffocation.

Hirata was a first-grader at Nakakida Junior High School in Neyagawa in the prefecture and was reported missing early on Aug. 13, along with 12-year-old Ryoto Hoshino, also a first-grader at the same school.

A body, believed to be Hoshino's, was found in a mountainous area of Kashiwara, also in the prefecture, on Aug. 21.

Osaka prefectural police said Yamada, who lives in Neyagawa, denies any wrongdoing. His occupation is unknown.

“It is true that I drove the girl around in my car and went to the parking lot in Takatsuki," police quoted him as saying. "But another man, who was in the front passenger seat, removed the girl’s body from the car and abandoned it. The man hit the girl in the backseat. She died, but I was not aware of that. I don’t want to tell you the name and the age of the man.”

However, police are almost certain that no one else was involved in the incident.

With regard to how he met Hirata, Yamada told police, “I called out to her and she got into the car. I hadn't seen her before.”

The clothes worn by the boy found in Kashiwara were similar to those Hoshino had on him at the time of his disappearance. His face was also covered with duct tape. His hands were bound with tape in front of him. The body had multiple cuts.

Judging by the state of the body, several days had elapsed since he was killed, police said.

The body was found at 7:36 p.m. on Aug. 21 in a bamboo grove about 22 kilometers south of central Neyagawa.

Hirata's body was found in the parking lot around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 13. Her entire face was covered with duct tape. Her wrists were also bound with tape behind her back. She had more than 30 cuts, mainly on the left side of her body, including the arm. Police determined she suffocated around 7 p.m. on Aug. 13.

Hirata and Hoshino went out together on the evening of Aug. 12. They walked along a shopping street in front of Keihan Electric Railway Co.’s Neyagawashi Station from 1:10 a.m. and 5:10 a.m. on Aug. 13, according to footage taken by a security camera.

Police said the footage also showed a minivan entering and leaving the area several times. A minivan was also filmed by security cameras in and around the parking lot in Takatsuki.

Police concluded that the two minivans could easily be the same, and discovered the vehicle was owned by Yamada.

Video footage taken by security cameras showed Yamada parking his minivan outside a convenience store in Kashiwara at 12:40 p.m. on Aug. 13 to purchase duct tape.

Police spotted Yamada’s minivan in a parking lot in a downtown area of Osaka city before dawn on Aug 21.

They shadowed Yamada for 19 hours and seven minutes, during which time he stopped at the bamboo grove in Kashiwara, where the body of a boy was later found.

Hirata exchanged messages with a friend through Line, a free communication app, early in the morning of Aug. 13.

The bicycles of the two children were found in front of the Neyagawashi Station.

The hunt for suspect Koji Yamada began when Osaka prefectural police started looking for a gray minivan seen in footage from security cameras. An investigator found such a vehicle, which belonged to Yamada, in a bustling area in the Doyamacho district of Kita Ward, Osaka, at 1.15 am Friday (12.15am Singapore time). googletag.impl.pubads.createDomIframe("a1_newsasia_imu_ad_container" ,"/5908/AsiaOneNews/asia/imu01_0",false,false); According to the police, Yamada drove the car around within Osaka Prefecture and stopped in a mountainous area in the Aotani district of Kashiwara in the afternoon of the same day. He then got out of the vehicle and entered a bamboo forest carrying nothing. After a while, he returned to the minivan and drove away.Investigators then searched the area and found the body of a boy at 7.36pm. The body was bound with duct tape wrapped in layers on its face and both hands. Death had occurred several days earlier, investigative sources said. The police continued to tail Yamada as investigators became more certain that he had abandoned the body of Natsumi Hirata, a 13-year-old girl.Shortly after 8pm., several police cars blocked Yamada's car while he was waiting for the light at an intersection in the Imafuku-Higashi district of Joto Ward, Osaka. An investigator opened the door on the driver's side and arrested him at 8.22pm after informing the suspect that there was a warrant for his arrest."A person was on the ground in the road, and three or four guys who looked like police officers were holding him down," said a female university student who witnessed the moment of the arrest. "The guy said nothing, and he didn't resist." - See more at: http://news.asiaone.com/news/asia/after-tailing-suspect-2nd-body-osaka-police-moved-arrest#sthash.COTLq2BL.dpuf
