YOKOHAMA (Jiji Press) — The Yokohama District Court sentenced a 19-year-old youth on Wednesday to nine to 13 years in prison for murdering a 13-year-old boy in Kawasaki in February last year.
In the trial involving lay judges, public prosecutors demanded imprisonment of 10 to 15 years for the alleged murder and assault of the boy, the longest indeterminate sentence under Japan’s Juvenile Act.
During a court trial early this month, the young man, who is believed to have played a leading role in the high-profile case, admitted to the charges.
He hit Ryota Uemura, who was a junior high school first grader, in his face several times shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 17 last year at a parking lot in Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, according to the written indictment.
The youth is also believed to have cut Uemura in the neck several times with a box cutter on a bank of the Tama River around 2 a.m. on Feb. 20 the same year, leading to his death from hemorrhagic shock.
In their arguments in the trial, the prosecutors claimed that the case was one of Japan’s most inhumane and malicious juvenile crimes.
On the motive for the murder, the prosecutors said that the youth decided to kill Uemura out of fear of being arrested or retaliated against by acquaintances of Uemura for the initial attack in January last year.
Still, they said that his intent to kill Uemura was triggered unexpectedly, after the cutter was handed over by one of two boys who were with the youth at the scene.
The ringleader and the two boys were arrested in February last year. The two boys, both 18, were later indicted with assault resulting in death.
