Singer-songwriter Aska, half of the famous pop duo Chage and Aska, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of possessing stimulants, the police said.

Aska, 56, denied the allegations, saying, “I have never used kakuseizai.”

According to the police, Aska, whose real name is Shigeaki Miyazaki, is suspected of having been in possession of a small amount of “kakuseizai” (stimulants) in April.

Also arrested Thursday was Kasumi Tochinai, 37, an acquaintance. The two are suspected of having the drug in Tochinai’s apartment.

The powerful drug’s main ingredient is usually amphetamine or methamphetamine.

Later in the day, police sources said stimulants had been detected in Aska’s urine. They also found what appear to be illegal drugs in his apartment, the sources said.

After debuting in 1979, Chage and Aska produced several hit songs from the 1980s through the 1990s before taking a break in 2009. Their hits, also popular in China and other countries, include “Banri no Kawa,” “Say Yes,”and “Yah Yah Yah.”

Aska also launched a solo career in the midst of the duo’s stardom.

After suspending their activities in 2009, the pair reunited in January last year only to withdraw from the spotlight in October after a weekly magazine reported Aska had allegedly used illegal drugs, which he denied.

TOKYO —

Pop singer ASKA, who was arrested last Saturday, on suspicion of possession of the illegal stimulant drug MDMA, is now facing further charges for use of the narcotic, police said Tuesday.

ASKA, 56, whose real name is Shigeaki Miyazaki, was arrested at the apartment of a female acquaintance, Kasumi Tochinai, 37, who was also arrested on possession charges. Fuji TV reported Wednesday that police have been investigating possible drug use by ASKA since January.

Both ASKA and Tochinai have denied the charges. However, police said they searched ASKA’s Tokyo apartment and found 90 MDMA pills, white powder believed to be ground MDMA, as well as a urine test kit, Fuji TV reported.

Police said they have conducted tests on ASKA’s hair follicles to determine whether he has been using the stimulants for a long time. Police said ASKA willingly offered up samples of his hair for lab analysis.

The samples were extracted at the root, allowing police to be able to determine how long the suspect was using the drugs by measuring the amount of the substance present in each 1 cm of hair. The analysis is based on the fact that hair grows approximately 1 cm per one month.

As the investigation stands thus far, police have charged ASKA with only possession of illegal substances, but not their use.

Meanwhile, ASKA’s music label has withdrawn all his CDs from stores and stopped online sales as well.

CHAGE and ASKA made their musical debut in 1979 and remain hugely popular in Japan and other Asian countries where the duo have toured such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
