TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Riken research institute said Tuesday embattled scientist Haruko Obokata has not filed an appeal in response to a panel investigation finding that "STAP cells" she claimed to have created almost certainly did not exist.
Riken said Obokata was given a copy of the panel's findings on Dec. 26 last year, and had until Monday to raise an objection.
The report said that the stem cells Obokata called STAP, or stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency, cells were most likely embryonic stem cells that had been mixed into the experiments.
The seven-member panel of experts from outside Riken did not draw a conclusion on who introduced the ES cells or whether their introduction was accidental or deliberate.
Obokata is yet to comment publicly on the report, but on the day of its release her lawyer Hideo Miki called the possibility Obokata mixed in the ES cells "unthinkable."
The panel, launched in September, roundly condemned Obokata and the paper's co-authors and raised several fresh allegations that Obokata fabricated data.
The 31-year-old biologist, formerly a researcher at Riken's Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, left the government-backed institute last month after failing to reproduce the cells in a supervised trial.
Her research was initially lauded as a breakthrough when it was published in science journal Nature in January last year, offering the potential to easily produce cells capable of forming any kind of tissue without the controversial use of fertilized eggs.
But allegations of data falsification and fabrication soon piled up around Obokata, and Nature retracted the papers last July.
After the report's release, Riken said it will carry out no further investigation into the STAP cell issue.
